Bus Operator Loses Rural Contract

Barnsley & District bus company has lost the contract to run service 25 between Barnsley & Stocksbridge following a catalogue of erratic operations extending back over the last 18 months. In their place Yorkshire Traction will take over all operations on service 25 from Monday 26 April 2004, there will be no changes to the route or timetable.

Rob Shepherdson, Team Leader at the Transport Executive said "We are sympathetic to the needs of passengers travelling from the small communities served by this service and have been greatly concerned by the poor level of service provided by Barnsley & District despite strenuous efforts being made by the PTE to improve matters. Apart from the inconvenience experienced by passengers, confidence in the service was still being undermined, which is something we cannot tolerate. The Executive has an excellent working relationship with Yorkshire Traction and have every confidence that the operational problems recently experienced will be put firmly in the past".

Service 25 also links Barnsley Hospital, Dodworth, Hood Green, Thurgoland, Silkstone Common, Crane Moor, Wortley, Green Moor and Deepcar and is run on contract to the Transport Executive. It is also one of 19 rural services in South Yorkshire funded from the Department for Transport's Rural Bus Subsidy Grant, and one of 7 in the County to have a Passenger Charter.
