The Parish Transport is a scheme put in place to help rural communities through their parish or town councils. The Parish Transport Grant assists in carrying out a wide variety of projects to meet local transport needs.
This scheme is initially for parish and town councils throughout England to apply for a grant to implement projects that meet the local transport needs of their rural residents. The parish and town councils must work with their community to establish needs and to design appropriate solutions.
The grant can help fund a single transport project in one town or parish or the grant can fund many smaller projects. Parish councils can even apply jointly with each other for a larger slice of grant to develop larger projects.
Projects eligible to apply for the Parish Transport Grant include:
car clubs/minibuses for community use
helping to establish new transport schemes
vouchers for taxis or taxi sharing schemes
funding for a local bus company to divert a service through a village
projects to promote walking or cycling
purchasing cars, mopeds or minibuses for community use
extending an existing local transport project/service or making a service more viable
new and different ways of providing improved transport information.
South Yorkshire's current successful projects are:
Sykehouse and Fishlake TaxiBus Scheme - Sykehouse Parish Council
The Sykehouse and Fishlake TaxiBus Scheme links the parishes. It is also a vital link to and from connecting rail and bus services at Thorne/Stainforth. This innovative service enables the residents of the local communities to gain easier access to social, recreational and vocational amenities further a field.
Thorne Taxi Voucher Scheme - Thorne Moorends Town Council
The Taxi Voucher Scheme is all about giving greater and easier access to people with disability or mobility problems who find that existing transport links restrict their access to health, education, employment and recreation. Its aim is to allow passengers to have a bespoke service and be completely independent.
Bradfield Parish Transport Grant - Bradfield Parish Council
After much research with the local community within the Bradfield Parish area and two small transport needs were required. A local Luncheon Club for the elderly and the physically disadvantaged were in need of a transport link twice a month to attend the luncheon Club. The second was to supply Bradfield Parish School with a transport vehicle.
